Brigadier Rajendra Singh and his troops gave letters and orders to the Maharaja. Fighting valiantly for every inch of ground, he delayed the enemy's advance on two important days, during which important decisions were taken. The Indian Army joined the battle and the state of J&K was thus saved for India by Brigadier Rajendra Singh. He made the supreme sacrifice of his life on 26 October 1947 to fight Pakistani attackers in the Uri-Rampur sector.

Brigadier Rajendra Singh was an officer in the MVC Indian Army. He was the first recipient of the Mahavir Chakra in independent India when he was awarded posthumously by the then Army Chief Field Marshal KM Kariappa.
